Greg Berg is one of my craziest friends. I’m using the word crazy in the literal sense, in the way you might describe an insane person. He’s insane in a good way, like Jonathan Winters, but crazy none the less. He’s also one of my closest friends. He’s always calling me from L.A. and leaving messages on my voicemail as Gilbert Gottfried. The only thing is, there’s no way to tell the difference between Greg’s voice and the real voice of Gilbert. They sound exactly one in the same. It’s scary. Greg has made a career of sounding exactly like other people, animals, things, and objects. He was the voice of Baby Fozzie on the classic Muppet Babies cartoon. He was Donatello on the Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was Huckleberry Hound on the old Yo Yogi show. Lately, along with TV and movies his voice has been appearing in video games. If you ever kill a zombie in a first person shooter, it could very well be Greg moaning and screaming in agony.
I took this picture while on a visit to my parents’ house in North Hollywood. He’s standing in what used to be my bedroom with his head nestled into the leaves of a hanging potted plastic plant.
